There are remarkably few great tuskers left in the wild. Carrying ivory so immense that each tusk can weigh well over 100 pounds, these elephants are testament to times gone by and Amboseli is one of their last remaining strongholds.

Five rhinos, arranged almost by accident into a semicircle, meters from the lens.. Shot at 14mm from ground level, the formation reads as deliberate even though nothing about it was staged: horn after horn, ear after ear, curiosity held in check only by numbers, by the safety a group this size provides. Encounters like this don't repeat. What's captured here isn't just scale, though the lens makes that undeniable — it's a moment of mutual stillness between species that could have gone another way entirely, and didn't.

Story Behind The Image
Most rhino sightings are brief and defensive — a retreat into scrub, a back turned before the moment fully arrives. This one was different. In Solio's early mist, the animal didn't flee the frame; he simply materialized within it, unhurried, as though the fog itself belonged to him as much as the ground beneath his feet. I shot it low and wide, letting the trees and the haze carry as much weight as the rhino himself, because scale here isn't only about size — it's about the quiet authority of something this large moving through a landscape without disturbing it. That, to me, is the real subject: not the encounter, but the ease with which he owns it.

Story Behind The Image
This is a family unit in its entirety — matriarch at the center, the youngest calf drawn in close, every adult positioned around them with clear intent. There is strength in that formation, but it isn't only physical. It's built from memory: knowledge of water, of danger, of where to go and when, passed down through generations and carried forward by whoever leads next. What holds a herd like this together isn't instinct alone. It's inheritance — the accumulated experience of every elephant that came before, still shaping how the group moves today.

Solio moves differently than most reserves; here, white rhino aren't brief sightings but a settled, confident presence, the product of years of protection allowing the kind of patience this image required. Story Behind The Image
Shot at 14mm, ground level, close enough that the horn nearest the lens nearly breaks the frame — this wasn't built for detail so much as scale. Stripped down to form against open sky, the rhinos stop reading as individuals and start reading as something closer to geology: thick-skinned, deliberate, immovable. What the image asks for isn't rarity. It's presence — the physical weight of animals moving together in number, at Solio, in a landscape where protection has made that continuity possible again. The posture, the grouping, the way they hold their ground could belong to almost any era. What marks this moment as urgent isn't the image itself. It's how easily that timelessness could end.

Story Behind The Image
I first saw Esau in 2024, on my very first trip into Amboseli, and the moment has stayed with me since. Every return to this landscape has meant finding him again — photographing him in different light, different conditions, learning the small, particular things that separate one great tusker from another. This is what I've come to value most in this work: character only reveals itself with time, and the challenge is finding new ways to capture it as it does. Esau went through a difficult injury in early 2025, and this image marks his return to the calm, steady presence I first encountered — proof that some of the most powerful moments in this field aren't about the sighting itself, but about witnessing an animal's story continue to unfold.

As storm light collapses into silhouette, the matriarch leads her herd across Amboseli's open plain, their forms rendered not as individual animals but as one continuous, unbroken line of movement. I photograph elephants this way, in black and white, stripped of color and detail, because it is in their shape alone — the certainty of their stride, the closeness of their formation — that their story is most fully told. This is a portrait of legacy in motion, and of a family that endures, even as the sky above them darkens.

Story Behind The Image
There are perhaps twenty super-tuskers left on the planet — elephants whose ivory can weigh over 200 pounds each, a scale that doesn't fully register until you're standing in front of one. I spent time with Craig, one of the last of them, and his presence stayed with me in a way few animals have. He died this past January. Photographing Tee-jay here, I found myself thinking less about a single elephant and more about what it means for a legacy like this to continue at all — carried forward, tusk by tusk, by whatever giants remain.

Story Behind The Image
At 24mm and ground level, the horn splits the frame straight down its center, forcing every other element into alignment around it. Ear against ear, cloud against cloud, mass set dead-center against a sky doing the same work in reverse — this is a composition built entirely on symmetry, and precisely because of that, it holds. But symmetry alone doesn't hold attention. Presence does. What lingers isn't the geometry — it's the sense that something this perfectly balanced could tip either way, and that the animal at the center of it has no say in which direction it falls.

Story Behind The Image
Three rhinos, evenly spaced, low to the ground, each facing the lens with equal weight. I composed it after one of the oldest visual structures in art history — the triptych, three panels built to hold a single idea across beginning, middle, and end, birth, life, and continuation. Rendered this way, the animals stop reading as three separate encounters and start reading as one sustained form: repetition standing in for permanence, symmetry standing in for endurance. It's a structure that has been used for centuries to suggest something will last, something worth returning to again and again. Whether these animals get that same certainty is a very different question — and one this image doesn't answer so much as ask.

Story Behind The Image
Photographed under a sky heavy with weather, this is Tee-Jay at the moment the great bulls begin to return — drawn in from the peripheries to interact with the matriarchal herds that anchor Amboseli. He wasn't always this composed in front of the lens. The first encounter was tense, his body language alert, every movement cautious around something unfamiliar. By the second or third meeting, that changed. Something in him settled, the wariness gave way to something closer to trust, and what's captured here is the result: a tusker at ease, unhurried, entirely himself. Time does something to these encounters that a single sighting never could — it doesn't just deepen the photograph. It deepens the understanding behind it.

Story Behind The Image
Trunk curled back over her own head, dust rising around her like something summoned rather than simply kicked up. Shot close, cropped tight enough that texture becomes the subject: the deep folds of skin, the single visible tusk catching what light survives the haze, the whole frame dissolving into soft grey at the edges. Dusting is instinct, protection against sun and insects, nothing more. But isolated like this, stripped of context and landscape, it reads as something quieter and more private — an animal disappearing into dust.

Story Behind The Image
Kilimanjaro rises behind him, but the mountain is not the subject here — Craig is. Tracking elephants in Amboseli means something different than it does elsewhere: the animals are known, named, their lineages traced across generations by people who've spent years learning where they drink, who they travel with, how they move through a day. Craig is one of the last of the great tuskers, and photographing him is its own discipline — his scale threatens to overwhelm a frame, and yet his presence asks for intimacy rather than distance. The light on these plains shifts in seconds; the alignment that produced this image took far longer to earn than the frame itself suggests. What remains is not simply a portrait of an elephant. It's a document of a lineage, standing exactly where the mountain has watched his kind stand for generations before him.
