I first saw Esau in 2024, on my very first trip into Amboseli, and the moment has stayed with me since. Every return to this landscape has meant finding him again — photographing him in different light, different conditions, learning the small, particular things that separate one great tusker from another. This is what I've come to value most in this work: character only reveals itself with time, and the challenge is finding new ways to capture it as it does. Esau went through a difficult injury in early 2025, and this image marks his return to the calm, steady presence I first encountered — proof that some of the most powerful moments in this field aren't about the sighting itself, but about witnessing an animal's story continue to unfold.
All prints are produced with archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle FineArt paper for museum-grade longevity and exceptional colour accuracy. Five rhinos, arranged almost by accident into a semicircle, meters from the lens.. Shot at 14mm from ground level, the formation reads as deliberate even though nothing about it was staged: horn after horn, ear after ear, curiosity held in check only by numbers, by the safety a group this size provides. Encounters like this don't repeat. What's captured here isn't just scale, though the lens makes that undeniable — it's a moment of mutual stillness between species that could have gone another way entirely, and didn't.

Most rhino sightings are brief and defensive — a retreat into scrub, a back turned before the moment fully arrives. This one was different. In Solio's early mist, the animal didn't flee the frame; he simply materialized within it, unhurried, as though the fog itself belonged to him as much as the ground beneath his feet. I shot it low and wide, letting the trees and the haze carry as much weight as the rhino himself, because scale here isn't only about size — it's about the quiet authority of something this large moving through a landscape without disturbing it. That, to me, is the real subject: not the encounter, but the ease with which he owns it.

Story Behind The Image
Kilimanjaro rises behind him, but the mountain is not the subject here — Craig is. Tracking elephants in Amboseli means something different than it does elsewhere: the animals are known, named, their lineages traced across generations by people who've spent years learning where they drink, who they travel with, how they move through a day. Craig is one of the last of the great tuskers, and photographing him is its own discipline — his scale threatens to overwhelm a frame, and yet his presence asks for intimacy rather than distance. The light on these plains shifts in seconds; the alignment that produced this image took far longer to earn than the frame itself suggests. What remains is not simply a portrait of an elephant. It's a document of a lineage, standing exactly where the mountain has watched his kind stand for generations before him.
