Story Behind The Image

Shot from below, the angle transforms the boulder into something closer to architecture than landscape — a plinth rather than a rock, built for exactly this purpose. Wind moves through his mane, his paws rest firm at the edge, and the composition carries the weight of a monument rather than a sighting. He is one of the Golden Boys, a coalition that has come to define this stretch of the Serengeti, and that permanence is what I wanted the image to hold — not a lion passing through a moment, but one standing precisely where he was always meant to be.

Story Behind The Image

The mound dominates the frame; the cub barely does. Chin resting on stone, paw draped over the edge, she watches the lens with an expression that reads less like curiosity and more like waiting. Stripped to black and white, the image pares back to what mattered most in that moment — light, form, and the quiet weight of that stare. Termite mounds like this one serve leopards as lookout, nursery, and hideout all at once, and this mother had already lost a previous litter to predators in the area. What looks, at first glance, like stillness is something closer to vigilance — a small animal already learning what it means to wait, and to survive the waiting.

Story Behind The Image

The storm takes up nearly the entire frame, and the lion, small against it, doesn't seem to mind. He's positioned himself at the edge of the rock, watching the weather roll in rather than seeking shelter from it — a small, deliberate act of authority against something far larger than himself. I kept the composition wide, giving the sky the space it demanded, because the scale imbalance is the point: even the most formidable predator in this landscape is dwarfed by what moves above it. And yet he doesn't read as small. He reads as exactly where he's meant to be.

Full stretch along a fallen log, jaw wide mid-yawn, every muscle in her back visible beneath the rosettes — this is a leopard doing nothing more than waking up, and it's exactly the kind of moment that only shows up if you're already there when it happens. Out before sunrise, back long after dark, on this particular morning in Sabi Sabi the payoff was this: unguarded, unposed, entirely her own. People tend to call this patience, or luck. It's closer to persistence — showing up again and again until the ordinary moment finally becomes the extraordinary one.

Story Behind The Image

There's a moment with young cubs when play gives way to something else — a pause, a gaze that drifts past whatever's directly in front of them and holds on nothing in particular. I shot this low, at their level, to stay inside that pause rather than looking down on it. These two belong to the Zebra Kopje pride, in a stretch of the eastern Serengeti where prides shift and territories change hands more often than they hold. None of that is visible here. What's visible is simpler: two cubs looking outward, before they've fully understood what they're looking at. The title isn't about a place. It's about that instinct to face forward anyway, and trust that whatever comes will be met the same way.

Story Behind The Image

Kopjes rise out of the Serengeti almost without warning, and predators have always known exactly what to do with them. From this height, sound carries further and presence reads larger — everything up here is amplified. I shot this wide rather than tight, letting the rock take up most of the frame, because in Namiri the landscape is as much a part of the story as the lion herself. Lionesses don't call without reason — to locate the pride, to regroup, to be known. This wasn't a call, but it holds the same weight regardless: the sense of ground claimed, whether she needs to announce it or not.

Story Behind The Image

I got down low, level with the mound, until I noticed something the eye rarely catches in the moment — the curve of her neck echoing the exact rise of the termite hill behind her, two separate forms, but the same gesture. This wasn't composed so much as recognized: a brief instance where the landscape and the animal within it happened to speak the same visual language. The Okavango has a way of doing this, offering up terrain sculptural enough to hold its own against the animals that move through it. What results isn't simply a photograph of a leopard in a place. It's a study in echo — landscape and subject mirroring each other, if only for the length of a single frame.

She'd found the one spot in the landscape built for exactly this — elevated, sun-warmed, set apart from the movement scattered across the plains below. Small within the frame, deliberately so, the storm-heavy sky and the rock carry as much weight as the lioness herself, because what defines this image isn't the drama of the hunt or the herd. It's the absence of it. No urgency, no pursuit — just distance, height, and a lioness choosing stillness simply because she could. Sometimes the strongest images come from a predator doing nothing at all.

Story Behind The Image

Full frame, head on, every stripe accounted for — this is a tiger closing the distance rather than simply being observed. Shot low and straight ahead at Tiger Canyon in South Africa, the composition leaves nowhere else for the eye to go except into her stare. Tiger Canyon exists because so much of this species' wild range has already disappeared, and every animal within it carries that context, whether the frame shows it or not. What the image asks for isn't distance or reverence in the usual sense — it's direct confrontation, the kind that reminds you exactly what's being protected, and exactly what's at stake if it isn't.
