The Story Behind The Collection

Charge of the Light Brigade explores the enduring beauty and quiet strength of the Camargue horse. Set against the windswept marshes and reflective waters of southern France, the collection moves between moments of energy and stillness, revealing a breed defined as much by its calm presence as its power. Through bold contrasts of light, water, and landscape, these images celebrate one of Europe's most iconic horses

An embodiment of power, grace and the rare spirit of an ancient breed

A living myth

of the marsh

Photographing the Camargue horses felt less like observing a breed than entering a living myth. They seem to belong as much to the marsh, the salt, and the wind as they do to themselves.

"I was first drawn to the drama of their movement — the charge through water, the spray, the collision of power and light, but the deeper work revealed itself in the moments between.”

— Alex Wood

Shaped by salt water, open skies, and centuries of tradition, Camargue horses carry a mythology that feels inseparable from the landscape itself. They are powerful yet refined, ancient yet immediate — creatures of movement, endurance, and quiet grace.

The location offered a rare visual language: low horizons, reflective water, pale light, and the elemental force of horses moving through the marsh. It was also a demanding place to photograph. Wind, mud, spray, shifting weather, and the unpredictability of each group meant each frame required a balance of patience and instinct.

While the series began with the drama of motion — hooves striking water, bodies emerging through mist and spray, it gradually moved toward moments of stillness and restraint. High-key portraits and quieter interactions allowed me to explore a more minimal approach, stripping the image back until only form, light, and spirit remained. In that space, the Camargue horse becomes more than a breed. It becomes a living emblem of freedom, resilience, and myth.
