elements

Nowhere have I encountered an animal so intrinsically connected to its environment as the Icelandic horse. Its story is written not only in its history, but in the landscape it continues to call home.

“What surprised me most wasn't their beauty—it was their character. The more time I spent with Icelandic horses, the more I understood why they have inspired centuries of stories and admiration.”

— Alex Wood

The Icelandic horse is unlike any other breed. Descended from the horses brought to Iceland by Viking settlers more than a thousand years ago, it remains deeply woven into the nation's history, folklore, and identity. Generations of living alongside the Icelandic people have shaped a horse renowned not only for its resilience, but also for its calm temperament and quiet curiosity.

Photographed during the depths of the Icelandic winter, Equus Borealis: Between Fire and Ice brings together these remarkable horses with the raw volcanic and glacial landscapes that define their homeland. Each image seeks to reveal the enduring relationship between horse, landscape, and history that makes the Icelandic horse so distinctive.

Equus: Exploring Iceland is the story behind the collection, the journey through Iceland's winter landscapes, and the new challenges this project presented.
