PASCAL

AMBOSELI, KENYA, 2025

ENQUIRE

Captured against a backdrop of storm-laden skies, Pascal — one of Amboseli’s last great tuskers — stands illuminated by a fleeting shaft of sunlight. Rendered in black and white, the portrait strips away distraction, focusing entirely on the monumental presence of this extraordinary elephant. Every crease in his weathered skin,, every curve of his enormous tusks speaks of a life shaped by survival and quiet endurance.

When taking an image, one of the main goals I have is to bring a sense of the experience into the final composition. Photographing Pascal from a low angle, close to the  ground, exaggerates his towering form, amplifying his stature and power. Combined with the flat topography characteristic of Amboseli, this helps to convey the sense of awe that Pascal's presence commands in real life. It is a perspective designed not just to document, but to honor. Big tuskers like Pascal are among the rarest creatures on Earth, with fewer than 30 individuals left across Africa. Their survival grows more precarious with each passing year, threatened by poaching, shrinking habitats, and human-wildlife conflict. This image is not only a tribute to Pascal’s greatness but also a reminder -  In his survival, there is hope. In his image, a reminder of all we stand to lose.
