ECHOES OF THE STORM

AMBOSELI, KENYA, 2025

ENQUIRE

This image was taken in May, during a time when Amboseli transforms under the drama of seasonal change. Storms roll in fast, often followed by sudden breaks of light — and sometimes, if you’re lucky, a rainbow. These three elephants were moving slowly across the open plains, making their way toward the marshes. The rain had just passed, and the sky still held its weight, but light had begun to break through.

In Amboseli, this time of year brings extremes. Heavy rains give way to dry spells almost immediately, and the elephants respond by following ancient routes to water. The marshes, although surrounded by semi-arid land, are fed by underground streams that flow from melting glaciers and rainfall on Mount Kilimanjaro, just across the border in Tanzania. Even when the surrounding plains are dry, this hidden water source sustains life — a lifeline that elephants have relied on for generations.

Photographing in these conditions can be challenging. Storms shift quickly, and light is unpredictable. But the reward is in moments like this — when elephants appear under a darkened sky, the landscape still holding the energy of the storm, and the rainbow offers a brief contrast to the weight of the clouds.
