Photographed in the Eastern Serengeti during the rainy season, Call of the Kopjes captures a solitary male lion — known as Scar — standing watch atop a granite outcrop as a storm brews behind him. Scar was a well-known figure in this region, easily identified by the deep scar across one eye — a mark likely earned in a territorial fight with another male. He was dominant for years, and on this day, his presence on the rock felt unmistakably symbolic: weathered, alert, and unshaken by the shifting sky.
In the Serengeti, kopjes serve a purpose far beyond aesthetics. These rocky outcrops are essential vantage points, giving lions clear sightlines across the plains. During the rainy season, they also offer dry ground and elevation above sodden grasslands. For a lion like Scar, the kopje becomes a lookout, a resting place.
